Eggs and Bird Flu Warning

The European Union's food safety agency will advise consumers to avoid raw eggs and poultry in order to prevent the spread of bird flu, an official at the watchdog said, confirming a newspaper report.

The deadly H5N1 virus first surfaced in Asia but appears to be spreading quickly to the west on the wings of migrating birds. But it is difficult to transmit from bird to human - thousands of cases among poultry in Asia have resulted in only 120 human cases, of which 60 led to death.
