While I would not expect something on the same scale to occur in the UK, and compared to China the authorities would be quicker to react to a health scare, smaller scale incidents could still easily occur here. The Trading Standards system is a real mess, and currently there are many cases of products that do not meet EU regulations being allowed to continue to be sold (including cases known by Trading Standards) - although they may not be a 'health risk', there is still the issue of the rules may exist but they are not properly enforced.
